In April 2003, and again in April 2007, when you elected me to the School Board, I made a commitment to provide community/parent forums to:

  1. Empower parents and community to be totally involved in the improvement of our schools.

  1. Give parents and the community a voice in the decision making process for the best interests of our children.

  1. Solicit parent and community input, suggestions and recommendations in order to help the School Board make decisions that will reflect the desires, concerns and suggestions of the parents and community.

To this end, this is my third time around making my formal visitations and holding community-parent forums at each of our 20 schools.  The entire School Board has now adopted the concept.

I want to challenge, empower, encourage and solicit your 100% support, resources and involvement in making IUSD the jewel of the South Bay, the State and the Nation.

It takes the entire Village and Community to make this happen.  Together Everyone Accomplishes More!!!

I can say on behalf of this current School Board, that this is a “new day in IUSD”.  “Failure is no longer an option in IUSD”.  Our shared purpose as a School Board is to have the best learning environment for all students.  We want to build trust and move the school district forward.  We want to be partners with the staff and community in positive change.  We want to leave a legacy that this present School Board restored trust with the parents and community.  We want to oversee the putting together of a first rate distinguished, high performing academic program and first-rate facilities, making sure we continue to improve.  We want to perpetuate a legacy of positive culture as people come and go.  However, this current School Board has certainly changed the climate and culture of the IUSD during our tenure as your elected representatives.

Remember that you have a vital role in the education of our children and holding the School Board accountable to making sure that every child gets a high quality education.  Without you, there would be no need for a school or Board of Education.

As a former employer of IUSD, parent, volunteer and school site council president of Frank D. Parent School, I urge you to help make a difference in your child’s education, your school, and your community.  You are further encouraged to become active in the PTSA School Site Council, an active partner with IUSD, and also attend our School Board meetings on a regular basis.  Our meetings are held on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 7:00 p.m. at 401 S. Inglewood Avenue * Inglewood, CA.

Our major roles as your elected representatives are:

* To establish a vision for the community’s schools.

This vision reflects the consensus of the community, the School Board, and the District staff as to what students need in order to achieve their highest potential.

* To maintain an effective and efficient structure for the School District.

Although the School Board does not implement policies or programs, we are responsible for employing and supporting the Superintendent and setting policy for hiring of

other personnel.

* To ensure accountability to the public.

As community representatives, we are accountable to the public for the performance of the community's schools.

* To provide community leadership.

Board members have a responsibility to involve the community and parents in meaningful ways in setting a direction for the District and to communicate clear information about District policies, educational programs and fiscal conditions.

As your elected officials, the School Board members are advocates for the students, the School District’s educational programs and public education.

Therefore, School Board members fulfill these responsibilities on a voluntary basis by working together as a governance team with the Superintendent to make decisions that will best serve all the students in the community and throughout IUSD.
